Lady Elks Close Out AZ Trip
Stanton vs Cal Pac Newcomers
ANAHEIM, CA – Despite a tough 70-42 final score on Saturday afternoon, the Stanton University women's basketball team proved they have the resilience to compete with the best in the conference. Facing off against California Pacific Conference newcomers Northern New Mexico at the Scott Activity Center, the Elks delivered a first-half performance that pushed the Eagles to their absolute limit.
A First Half to Remember
For the first 20 minutes of play, Stanton went toe-to-toe with a high-powered Northern New Mexico offense. The Elks entered the locker room at halftime trailing by a mere four points, 36-32. The energy was electric as Stanton utilized a disciplined defensive scheme and timely shooting to keep the game within reach, proving that their record doesn't fully reflect the talent on this roster.
Young's Masterclass on the Glass
The standout story of the afternoon was the dominant interior presence of center Najharae Young. Young put on a rebounding clinic, hauling in a staggering 19 rebounds (including 6 on the offensive end) to go along with 10 points. Her ability to control the paint and provide second-chance opportunities was a beacon of consistency for the Elks. She also added two blocks and two steals, anchoring the defense for 35 minutes of action.
Key Performers
While the second half proved difficult for the Elks' offense, several individuals stepped up to provide sparks:
-
Sophia Laurel: Coming off the bench, Laurel led the team in scoring with 11 points, including three clinical makes from beyond the arc.
-
Estela Sancho: A true floor general, Sancho logged a team-high 38 minutes, contributing 7 points, 8 rebounds, and a team-leading 5 assists.
-
Isabel Betancor: Provided a perimeter threat with two triples, finishing with 7 points.
Looking Ahead
While the Cal Pac newcomers eventually pulled away in the fourth quarter, the Elks showed that their ceiling is high. The chemistry between Young in the post and the guard rotation of Sancho and Castro is visibly growing. If Stanton can bottle the intensity they displayed in the first half, they will be a dangerous opponent for anyone in the conference as the season progresses.
