Elks Take On Point Loma
McKay, Patton Jr. Lead Elks
San Diego, CA - The Stanton Elks showed significant promise on the offensive end against a strong Division II opponent, falling to the Point Loma Sea Lions 101-67 on Saturday night at Golden Gym. Despite the final score, the Elks proved they could compete in stretches, highlighted by an impressive shooting performance in the first half.
Elks Shine from Downtown Early
Stanton came out firing, especially from beyond the arc. In the first half, the Elks were highly efficient, shooting 45.2% from the field (14-31) and a blistering 46.2% from three-point range (6-13), helping them net 40 points before halftime.
Leading the charge offensively for Stanton were:
-
Nigel McKay (#05): Tied for the team lead with 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting, which included sinking four three-pointers. McKay was also a force on defense, tallying 3 steals.
-
Jermaine Patton Jr. (#02): Matched the scoring high with 16 points, showing versatility by hitting 6-of-12 from the field and getting to the line successfully, making 3-of-4 free throws. He also added 3 assists and 3 steals.
-
Jordan Griffin (#33): Provided strong rebounding, leading the Elks with 11 boards alongside his 15 points.
Resilient Performance
Facing an undefeated and talented Point Loma team, the Elks showed resilience. They were nearly perfect from the free-throw line in the game's entirety, finishing 73.9% (17-23), a key sign of composure. The Elks also capitalized on their offensive boards, converting 11 second-chance points.
While Point Loma's depth and second-half surge (51 points) proved too much, the aggressive play and efficient shooting from key Elks starters are positive signs for the young program as they continue their challenging early-season schedule.
