Stanton’s Home Opener Marks Growing Pains
Rought Start
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Stanton University men's basketball team tipped off their inaugural home game last night against Arizona's Benedictine University, marking the beginning of a new era under head coach Acuña. Despite a promising atmosphere and strong home support, the Elks fell 55–84 in what proved to be a challenging debut on their own court.
From the opening whistle, Benedictine's experience and composure were evident. The Redhawks pressed early, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on fast breaks to build a double-digit lead before halftime. Stanton showed flashes of their potential — stringing together runs led by a mix of athletic newcomers and returning talent — but the team's lack of chemistry was clear in the early stages of the season.
The Elks, competing in their first full season as members of the NAIA, are still finding their rhythm as a unit. Though the scoreline was lopsided, the team showed grit and moments of offensive creativity that gave the home crowd reasons to cheer.
As Stanton continues through non-conference play, the focus will be on growth and cohesion. The Elks will look to regroup and return stronger in their next matchup as they continue laying the foundation for what could be an exciting season ahead.
Final Score:
Benedictine (AZ) 84, Stanton 55
